Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

While identity theft cannot be entirely eliminated, implementing the following preventive measures can greatly minimize the risks.

Steps to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

  1. Monitor Your Financial Accounts Regularly – Regularly review bank statements, credit card transactions, and credit reports to detect any suspicious activity.
  2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords – Employ complex passwords for different accounts and consider using a password manager.
  3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) – Adding an extra layer of security helps protect sensitive accounts from unauthorized access.
  4. Be Cautious with Personal Information – Avoid sharing personal data over the phone, email, or social media, unless absolutely necessary. Watch out for shoulder surfers and eavesdroppers.
  5. Shred Sensitive Documents – Properly dispose of documents containing personal information to prevent dumpster diving theft.
  6. Keep Mail Secure  –  Use a locked mail receptacle for incoming and outgoing mail.
  7. Stay Alert to Phishing Attempts – Do not click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown sources.
  8. Use Secure Networks – Avoid conducting financial transactions over public Wi-Fi networks without using a VPN.
  9. Freeze Your Credit if Necessary – If you suspect a risk, freezing your credit can prevent fraudsters from opening new accounts in your name.
