Building

In 1937, seven faculty members adopted the credit union philosophy and founded the University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union. The founders sent out letters to faculty members encouraging participation. The University of Nebraska FCU attracted Depression-weary professors and those who were rejected by banks. Joining a credit union seemed a better alternative to loan sharks.

Membership was initially only open to faculty members. Members were required to purchase at least one share for five dollars and charged a 25 cent enrollment fee. Those unable to purchase the share up front were given a year to pay off the initial share amount. The University of Nebraska FCU only offered savings accounts at first. The credit union distributed its first loan in February 1939.

The University of Nebraska FCU operated from a faculty member’s desk drawer for the first five years, then moved to the Dairy Building on East Campus in 1943, to Agricultural Hall six years later, to the Faculty Club on City Campus in 1969, to the 501 building prior to construction of the Wick Alumni Center and finally to 1630 Q Street in 1985. In 1997, NUFCU opened another branch at 301 N 52nd Street and in July 2012, the main location moved to 1720 P Street.

Today, the University of Nebraska FCU has over 10,500 members and over $96 million in assets. It offers mobile banking, mobile deposit, Internet banking, checking and savings accounts, credit cards, consumer loans, mortgage loans, business loans, online bill pay and many other services. Individuals eligible for membership include  faculty, staff, volunteers, alumni* and students on any University of Nebraska campus; and their families.
